Dominion Valley Garden Club
Youth Gardening
The Dominion Valley Garden Club started the Seed to Sprout Program in 2016. This annual event is geared to children ages 5-10 and is designed to teach them about starting plants from seeds. Approximately 15-20 children participate in the program at the local Burke Centre Library.
DVGC members read aloud the book, From Seed to Plant by Gail Gibbons. Following a discussion about the book, members show examples of different kinds of seeds. Then children participate in various activities including “planting” seeds in small Ziplock bags using damp cotton balls as a starting medium. Each bag is strung on a piece of yarn to wear around the neck or put into a pocket, so it stays warm. Children take home a small pot and some soil so that the tiny plants can be transferred after seeds germinate.
